The concept of equality has been misconstrued for such a long time that only now are people beginning to realize what it truly means. The Declaration of Independence mentioned this notion, but in reality, it started to flourishes recently. Every generation is more advanced and progressive than the previous one when it comes to social justice, values, and policies. This generation is definitely focused on creating a system where everyone is heard and understood. Equality is the foundation of a prosperous society that values inclusion, respect, reciprocity, and fairness, which is what this generation is eager to achieve.
Political equality is the first step in creating a favorable environment for the society. Policies that focus on creating equal rights for every member are benefiting each individual from the general public. Wilson noted that political equality leads to equality in all fields (2019). Each person wants to be heard, and having the same power and influence as everybody else helps them voice their opinion.
Economic inequality is another level of unfairness that manifests itself as the presence of a significant income gap. Wealth inequality shows explicitly just how different household incomes can vary. People are starting to feel dissatisfied with the minimal wages the corporations are paying them, the lack of health insurance, and the living situations they are in despite working long hours. It has been a relevant topic in the last couple of years, and this generation is strong-willed and more determined to create a society where people are being paid accordingly.
While there are no official laws that discriminate or marginalize a particular group of people, many individuals feel a lack of inclusivity. This is why conversations about racial and gender equality are so meaningful. This decade has opened the door for topics that have not been so frequently brought up on this level before. Campaigns such as the Civil rights movement and the women’s rights movement paved the way for modern-day equality. However, there is still tension in society. This generation is determined to continue this process.
Inclusion and equality are best described by the year 2020. The death of one man turned the world upside down, which is the best proof of how society has changed. After a police officer murdered George Floyd, people decided to take action and speak up. This tragedy turned into protests in multiple countries all around the world. The central premise was to point out how police brutality affects the black community. This incident was enough for society to wake up, and it is an excellent example of how active and socially aware this generation is.
Another fantastic step towards equality is the effort to create a safe work environment for all genders. Women have been historically oppressed and marginalized. While there are significant improvements in gender equality, the last couple of years have been detrimental to minimizing sexual harassment and misconduct. Most corporations have policies that include a zero-tolerance approach regarding harassment. Safety, comfort, and respect are much more significant notions than they used to be before, which can be attributed to this generations efforts.
There is still a long way to go, but experience shows that society is improving on many different levels. Equality is crucial for this generation, and it has been beneficial for every group of people that has previously suffered from abuse, neglect, marginalization, and injustice. This generation symbolized social awareness, identifying deep-rooted issues, and taking action towards a better future, and striving for equality is how it manifests.
